There is a popular confusion among users whether PNR Status can be checked using the passenger’s name or other details or not. However, since the personal details of each passenger are kept confidential with the Indian Railways, one may not check the PNR Status with their names on Trainpnrstatus

About PNR number

The Indian Railways’ “Passenger Name Record” (PNR), is a unique 10 digit number. It is provided against every booked train ticket, whether the ticket is booked online or physically ( through the railway station ticket counters). A single PNR number can be provided to a maximum of six passengers when group booking is sought.

The Centre of Railway Information Systems (CRIS) stores this number after booking your ticket. PNR number is a record of passenger’s personal information like name, age, gender etc. it also carries general information like your train schedule. One can also track live train running status.

About PNR status & information it carries

PNR status is the current status of your IRCTC train ticket booking. PNR status informs the booking status of the train ticket. It states whether the ticket has been confirmed, is on the waiting list (WL) or is under reservation against cancellation (RAC).

PNR Status also provides the coach and seat number, fare paid by the passenger with the transaction ID and the mode of payment apart from the basic information about live training status, arrival and departure time of trains.

Location of PNR number in the ticket

If you are buying a ticket from Indian Railway Station, the PNR number is printed at the top left corner of the ticket. If you have booked an e-ticket from the IRCTC website or on an online travel website, the PNR number is present as an individual section on the top.

PNR number structure

The PNR number consists of 10 digits, where the first 3 digits specify the PRS(Passenger Reservation system ) from which the ticket is booked. The first digit specifies the starting station of the train of the ticket. Stations are grouped on the basis of zones.

  • SCR zone (Secunderabad PRS)
  • NR, NCR, NWR, or NER zone( New Delhi PRS)
  • SR, SWR, or SCR zone (Chennai PRS)
  • NFR, ECR, ER, EcoR, SER or SECR zone (Kolkata PRS)
  • CR, WCR, or WR zone (Mumbai PRS)

The last 7 digits are randomly generated digits, only to make the PNR number unique.

Four hours before the train’s departure time, the Final Reservation chart is prepared. This chart is posted on the notice board of railway station platforms. It is advisable that you reach the station beforehand and recheck your PNR status from the chart.

About types of Indian Railways Tickets

There are two types of Indian railway tickets

E-Tickets

E-Tickets or Electronic Tickets are only booked through IRCTC website. You need to take a print out of the booked ticket and show it to the TTE with relevant passenger ID

i-Tickets

i-Tickets are tickets booked at IRCTC website and later gets delivered through courier at your doorstep. You may also book at the railway reservation counter.

Types of PNR status & their meanings

India Railways PNR Status comprises travel details in short forms. Following are the terms used in the live PNR status of your ticket:

  • CNF (Confirmed) PNR Status: it means that your ticket has been confirmed and the allotment of the passenger’s seat is done after preparation of the chart.
  • RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) PNR Status: it means that your ticket will get confirmed against the cancellation of previously booked tickets. Your seat gets confirmed but the berth remains waitlisted. Also, if you hold a RAC ticket at the time of the journey, you would be allotted a seat which is generally shared by another RAC ticket holder.
  • WL (Waiting List) PNR Status: it means that your ticket will get confirmed only after the RAC tickets are confirmed.
  • CAN ( Cancelled) PNR Status: it means that the ticket has been cancelled and the passenger cannot board the train.

Types of Waitlist Tickets & Their Confirmation Priority

When tickets are not confirmed, railway allots different types of waitlist quota on tickets.

  • GNWL (General Waiting List): You may get a GNWL quota if your boarding and deboarding stations are close to train source and destination stations.
    Chances of confirmation: Highest
  • CKWL (Tatkal Waiting List): If you are booking a ticket under Tatkal quota and the ticket is unreserved, you get CKWL status. Please note that GNWL tickets will confirm first and then CKWL.
    Chances of confirmation: Lowest
  • PQWL(Pooled Quota Waiting List): These are issued if you are boarding from the source station and deboarding from an intermediate station or if you are boarding from an intermediate station and deboarding at the terminal station.
    Chances of confirmation: moderate
  • RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List)/ RLGN (Remote Location General Waiting List): These are issued for stations that fall between the source and destination stations.
    Chances of confirmation: Moderate
  • RSWL (Roadside Station Waiting List): It is a rare quota. These are issued when the ticket is booked for intermediate stations that are not covered by the rest of the list.
    Chances of confirmation: Lowest

Travelling with only PNR number

You may travel only with a PNR number if your ticket is confirmed, then you have to give TTE your ticket details along with your ID proof

Checking old PNR status

PNR number’s validity is up to the completion of the journey. However, Indian railways keep the PNR in their digital repository for six months after the completion in event of queries. After a period of 9 months, IRCTC can reuse the same PNR number.

Print your ticket using train PNR number

You have to enter your PNR no. in the search box, a new window will be opened having details of your ticket. Click on the print sign. Make sure your device is connected to a printer. Else, you may save the ticket in pdf form.

About Tatkal Bookings

Indian Railways keeping in mind the need to book tickets on urgent basis for immediate travel plans, introduced Tatkal Booking system. Tatkal booking for every train opens 1 day in advance at 10 am for AC and 11 am for Non AC.

You can book a tatkal ticket online at irctc.co.in. You can also visit the Indian railways tatkal booking counter to book a ticket. Please don’t forget to carry the right ID proof of the passenger.

Every train and class has a defined tatkal quota and it varies from station to station. Please note that many of the trains do not have a tatkal category.

Tatkal category is not applicable to First AC class and second seating class. Ladies and general quota is not allowed. No concession is available in the tatkal booking.

Where to find PNR number on ticket?

PNR number is generally printed at the top left corner of the printed tickets (tickets that are taken from railway station booking window). In case of the E – Ticket (tickets that are booked online or through IRCTC website), it is mentioned at top in separate cell.
