What is PNR?

The Indian Railways’ “Passenger Name Record” (PNR), is a unique 10 digit number. It is provided against every booked train ticket, whether the ticket is booked online or physically ( through the railway station ticket counters). A single PNR number can be provided to a maximum of six passengers when group booking is sought. PNR number is a record of passenger’s personal information like name, age, gender etc. it also carries general information like your train schedule. Where can I see my PNR number?

The Indian Railways’ “Passenger Name Record” (PNR), is a unique 10 digit number. If you are buying a ticket from Indian Railway Station, the PNR number is printed at the top left corner of the ticket. If you have booked an e-ticket from the IRCTC website or on an online travel website, the PNR number is present as an individual section on the top.

What Information PNR Have?

  • Current status - PNR Status will be CNF, if your ticket is confirmed. It will be WL, if your ticket is on the Waiting List. It will be RAC, if your ticket has Reservation Against Cancellation

You can check IRCTC PNR status via SMS: Type PNR < Your PNR Number> and send to 139 OR via Call: Dial 139 to get the live PNR status.

You have to enter your PNR no. in the search box, a new window will be opened having details of your ticket. Click on the print sign. Make sure your device is connected to a printer. Else, you may save the ticket in pdf form.

How do I get the seat number which has changed from WL to CNF PNR status?

If PNR Status of a booking changes from WL to CNF, then Seat number is allocated only at the time of chart preparation, So if the original PNR status of a booking was not CNF, then passenger need to keep a track of its current PNR Status. Once the PNR Status changes to CNF, Coach and Berth number will be provided to passenger

What is RAC PNR Status

RAC PNR Status stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. It is a type of ticket, which ensures travel but does not guarantee the allocation of a complete berth to the passenger. In RAC PNR Status, 2 passengers will be allocated a single sleeper berth which they have to share between them.

How to book tatkal tickets?

Indian Railways keeping in mind the need to book tickets on urgent basis for immediate travel plans, introduced Tatkal Booking system. Tatkal booking for every train opens 1 day in advance at 10 am for AC and 11 am for Non AC. You can book a tatkal ticket online at You can also visit the Indian railways tatkal booking counter to book a ticket. Please don’t forget to carry the right ID proof of the passenger. Every train and class has a defined tatkal quota and it varies from station to station. Please note that many of the trains do not have a tatkal category. Tatkal category is not applicable to First AC class and second seating class. Ladies and general quota is not allowed. No concession is available in the tatkal booking.

Whats are the Types of Waitlist Tickets?

When tickets are not confirmed, railway allots different types of waitlist quota on tickets.

  • GNWL (General Waiting List): You may get a GNWL quota if your boarding and deboarding stations are close to train source and destination stations.
    Chances of confirmation: Highest
  • CKWL (Tatkal Waiting List): If you are booking a ticket under Tatkal quota and the ticket is unreserved, you get CKWL status. Please note that GNWL tickets will confirm first and then CKWL.
    Chances of confirmation: Lowest
  • PQWL(Pooled Quota Waiting List): These are issued if you are boarding from the source station and deboarding from an intermediate station or if you are boarding from an intermediate station and deboarding at the terminal station.
    Chances of confirmation: moderate
  • RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List)/ RLGN (Remote Location General Waiting List): These are issued for stations that fall between the source and destination stations.
    Chances of confirmation: Moderate
  • RSWL (Roadside Station Waiting List): It is a rare quota. These are issued when the ticket is booked for intermediate stations that are not covered by the rest of the list.
    Chances of confirmation: Lowest

Can I Travel with only PNR number?

You may travel only with a PNR number if your ticket is confirmed, then you have to give TTE your ticket details along with your ID proof

How I can check old PNR status?

PNR number’s validity is up to the completion of the journey. However, Indian railways keep the PNR in their digital repository for six months after the completion in event of queries. After a period of 9 months, IRCTC can reuse the same PNR number.
